Lifebuoy is adopting a village in central India to help every child living there reach their fifth birthday.
The Gondappa campaign aims to improve hygiene standards in Thesgora village in Madhya Pradesh by providing handwashing education to children and their families to reduce the number of children dying from infections such as diarrhoea and pneumonia. Thesgora has one of the highest rates of diarrhoea in India.
Over the next year, you can follow the story of the village through social media and see how healthy handwashing habits impact on the lives of the children and their families.
Lifebuoy’s Facebook fans and YouTube channel subscribers can follow the stories of five children as they journey towards their fifth birthdays. As well as watching video episodes of the children’s lives, you can get directly involved through donations, messaging and volunteering.
Samir Singh, Lifebuoy Global Brand Vice President, says: “Our goal is to change the handwashing behaviours of 1 billion people by 2015; we have reached 130 million people so far. This film tells the world what Lifebuoy has been doing as part of its social mission for the last ten years and invites the world to join in by pledging its support.”
You can find out more about the campaign at facebook.com/lifebuoyLink opens in a new window and pass the message on to your family and friends. You can also share the Saving Lives filmLink opens in a new window which highlights just what better handwashing habits can mean to families and communities with as many people as you can and pledge your support on Facebook.
The Gondappa campaign builds on Lifebuoy’s ongoing work to reduce the number of children dying from preventable diseases and raise awareness about the importance of good handwashing habits.
Every year diarrhoea and pneumonia claim the lives of 2 million children under the age of five. However, clinical research shows that handwashing with soap at key occasions such as after using the toilet and before eating can cut the risk of diarrhoea by up to 45%.
